Lagom is a Swedish word that means ‘just the right amount’ or ‘in moderation’. Another way to describe the term is to consider Goldilocks – not too hot, not too cold, just right – that’s lagom. And this has been a way of life for Swedes since Viking times. Now, this cultural lifestyle is reaching the US.
Anna Brones, who wrote the book Fika, which is another Swedish way of life that’s about stopping to take coffee breaks throughout the day, brings us Live Lagom. With this book, Brones wants to teach us, the US, on how to slow down and stop living in the extreme. She reminds us that we don’t need everything and that we should be living in the moment.
We are busy people. We have low attention spans. We don’t stop to enjoy ourselves or nature. We are constantly on the go, in a hurry or rushed to get to the next spot. When we do have downtime we are either on social media or watching television. Live Lagom is about finding balance. Sure you can work 50 to 60 hours, but you have to find that amount of time for yourself and for your family. Time to slow down and be in that moment that really counts.
The book starts out with a lengthy introduction to the concept of lagom in the Swedish society. Then, in the following chapters, the books explains how to can live lagom at work, at home, with your health, the environment, and the lessons we can all learn from living this new, Swedish way. Besides all this great information that really makes you think and want to down-size everything that you own, there are also a few Swedish food recipes in the ‘Lagom at Home’ chapter.
I grew up loving my Swedish heritage. I love to read and understand everything Swedish. I cook the foods. I listening to the folk songs. Read its history. Sometimes ‘try to learn‘ the language. But, like most Americans, I live in the extreme and own way more stuff than I need. This book made me take a step back and reevaluate how I’m living. It’s an amazing book that gets you thinking and wanting to make a change for the better. The point that got me the most is the work hours between Sweden and the USA. In the US, we work ourselves to death. In the past, I’ve worked 60 hour weeks; sometimes a 50 hour week was normal. In Sweden, it’s 40 then home. If you work over 40, everyone thinks that you’re not a good worker and you had to stay over to finish your work.
So, go home. Be with your family. Scale back with everything and you’ll feel better. Live Lagom is the blueprint to live by.
As always, I keep everything transparent here. I was given a copy of Live Lagom by Anna Brones in exchange for an honest review. I love this book. If you want to learn how to slow it down and find a balance in your life, read this book.
